Holiday Party / Art Show/ Sale at CNJComics 12-16-2017 Update
Alright! Here’s the complete info on our annual Holiday Party / Art Show / Sale / Fundraiser to benefit the Cleveland Food Bank!
THE BASICS
On Saturday December 16th from 10am to 7pm we host an art show featuring local artists doing custom covers to benefit the Cleveland Food Bank. These covers can be won in a basket raffle system where one food item or dollar gets you one ticket. You get to pick where your tickets go so you can win a cover you really like! This years theme is “The Holiday Season” so expect covers celebrating Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, etc…
This year it looks like we will have a record number of covers! Thank you Cleveland! Here’s a few:
Art by Sequoia Bostick.
Art by Len Peralta
We will then shut down the store for an hour at 7pm only to reopen at 8pm for our Annual Holiday Customer Appreciation Party! The party last till around 11pm and features snacks, beverages and holiday cheer! Winners of the basket raffle are drawn promptly at 10:30pm and if you win you can take your piece of artwork home with you!
All the money collected during the art show will go to the Cleveland Food Bank, who have the uncanny ability to turn one dollar into four full meals for those in need during the holidays.
Jason Fitch and his new organization P.O.P.C.O.R.N. will be taking responsibility of the food collection at the party and making sure it gets to the right place.
THE DAY
In addition to being able to check out all the artwork early, we’ll also be running a massive store wide sale. These discounts will continue into the party as well.
(Yes, you can check out the covers and put your tickets in all day long, it’s becoming a popular way of circumventing the crowd at night.)
- 50% off ALL Back Issues
- 20% of ALL Graphic Novels
- 20% of ALL Action Figures, Statues and Pop Funs.
- 10% off EVERYTHING ELSE in the shop.
Local artist Erin Schechtman Caruso; from Super Group Hugs; has created a custom print for us modernizing the classic Superman Americana poster from 1949/1950’s. This image was recently rediscovered and highlights the best sentiment this hobby has to offer.
We are very proud of this poster as it is in line with the values of our shop. 60 years old and it’s a great reminder for today. Here are some articles about the history of the original piece of artwork:

This poster will be FREE with any DC purchase and will be available all day as well as through the holiday shopping season. (As with previous prints, if you would like a second copy, please throw $5 in the Food Bank Fund. You just helped created 20 more meals!)
We will also be giving away a free Warrior’s Three – Dog Day Afternoon Hardcover with any purchase while supplies last. (we have over 200 copies from some BOGO thing Marvel did.) This book was written by Fables’ author Bill Willingham and features the warriors from the Thor movies. It also includes a classic Hulk reprint detailing his first visit to Asgard, which is pretty relevant after Thor Ragnarok. ( just another little thing to sweeten the pot.)
THE PARTY:
All are welcome to our Holiday Party which runs from 8pm to 11pm. Our first gift to you is this coupon good for 50% off any one item in the shop! Please print it out or show us this image on your smart phone when you check out.
Coupons MUST be used at the party between 8pm and 11pm. (Sorry, no exceptions.) Limit one per person.
We love to use local vendors at our events, and we also love women who are running their own businesses. We’ll have desserts from Fear’s Confections; as well as the Burning River Baking Company.
Cassandra will be putting together a geeky holiday chocolate tray, while Andrea is working on superhero cat cookies and CNJ branded cupcakes.
That do nothing Winston scrawled out a beer recipe on a napkin and we actually turned it into something drinkable. “Winston’s Winter Warmer’ will be available while supplies last when the bar opens at 8pm.
We’ll also have beer from Great Lakes, Platform and Saucy Brew Works. There will be non Alcoholic options. (For the record, our holiday party is an all ages affair.) While refreshments are absolutely free, our bartender Macklin works solely on tips, so please do the right thing.
Carol will be coming out for the party escorted by our own creepy Santa Rick. (She may even dress up as Mrs. Claus depending on how her lambic framboise is treating her.) We’ll have some cool photo op areas set up around the shop so be sure to charge your phone. It’s also worth noting that wearing stupid holiday clothes makes everything more fun. Ugly Christmas Sweaters are a thing. Laura Wimbels from FACESofCLE will even be wandering around for a bit taking photos!
We’ve had a really great year and this is our way of giving back to our customers, community and city. We are grateful for everyone’s support, from the artists to the vendors to YOU for showing up and making it happen. Last year as a community we were able to help the Cleveland Food Bank to create over 10,000 meals, as well as collecting over 600 food items. (It takes me a second to wrap my head around that from time to time.) This turns the party into much more than a good time. It gives it a meaning in line with what the holidays really stand for, that we can do more good gathered together than we can alone. Let’s never stop trying to help people who could use a little, especially at this time of year. I’m really proud of the relationships that have formed around the shop, and it’s always fun to see everyone together.
Even that jerk Winston.
Peace!
