MARVEL

Crypt of Shadows is Marvel’s celebration of All Hallows’ Eve! Featuring six stories written by Al Ewing, Rebecca Roanhorse, Chris Condon, Danny Lore, Chris Cooper, and Adam Warren, with art by Ramon Bachs, Geoff Shaw, Fran Galan, Karen S. Darboe, Ibrahim Moustafa, and Adam Warren. There are ghosts, werewolves, possessions, a spooky old mansion, vampires, creepy creatures, monsters, and spells!

A new dark take on Spider-Man begins in Deadly Neighborhood Spider-Man #1 from B. Earl and Taboo and Juan Ferreyra. Nightmare visuals, Junji Ito-esque spirals, a blur between dreams and reality, and science and magic make this a creepy read.

DC

It’s another One Bad Day, this time for The Penguin. With his criminal enterprise stolen from him by the Umbrella Man, Penguin is broken, but he’s determined to reclaim his empire and reinstate his rules for crime in Gotham. Armed with a gun, three bullets, and five dollars, Penguin starts to put a crew together to take back what’s his. Written by John Ridley and art by Giuseppe Camuncoli.

Following the events of Harley Quinn: The Animated Series, season 3, (Which I loved! Best season so far, with the best Joker, and the best Batman!) Harley Quinn: The Animated Series: Legion of Bats #1, written by Tee Franklin and art by Shae Beagle, finds Harley as part of an unlikely team and Ivy prepping for her new job as leader of the Legion of Doom! Or Ladies and Nonbinaries of Doom! Bane still wants his pasta maker back!

DC offers the Marvel Family #1 Facsimile Edition ahead of the Black Adam movie release (and the Shazam sequel at some point). Including the original advertisements, this reprint is Black Adam’s 1945 debut by Otto Binder and C.C. Beck!

SMALL PRESS

Hellboy in Love is a new five-issue mini-series co-written by Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden with art by Matt Smith. Goblins are stealing from train passengers, and Dr. Anastacia Bransfield is their latest target. She teams up with Hellboy to track down the thieves, and they end up at a local punk show. And someone’s crushing on Hellboy. (Who wouldn’t?)

The final issue of Deadly Class is out this week, and here are Ben’s thoughts:

“This is arguably the most influential comic book series I’ve encountered during my tenure at the comic shop. The last month leading up to this final issue’s release was a mixed bag of emotions. I wasn’t looking forward to this 8 year ride coming to an end. Until I closed the last page.

From issue #1 (January 2014) this series has explored themes of nihilism, empathy, unlikely friendships, optimism, and the lasting effects of violence on young minds, in a pitch perfect manner. Rick Remender’s plots round out perfectly over 8 years. His ability to create a love for a character and simultaneously allow us to understand the vengeance inevitably acted out upon them is uncanny. Pairing this with the amazing choices of character specific color pallets and sensationally flowing action scenes of Wes Craig’s artwork makes for one of my top 3 favorite comic series of all time.

I will miss my monthly anticipation of this series. I’ll miss these characters even though I can visit them anytime by popping by my graphic novel shelf. I wish them well as the ideas and potential they represented have no choice to live on after they’ve left print. They are too big to contain.

Read this comic.”

On our back wall, we added some Horror Recommendations. There are $1 Image #1s, small press issues, and trade paperbacks!

I also put out a short box of Horror and Halloween back issues on the table! There are even a few kid-friendly ones!

That’s it for this week, and you may have a guest writer for next week’s email, as I’ll be out of town for my honeymoon! I’ll be back in November, so enjoy the rest of the month and Happy Halloween!
