New releases at CNJ Comics on Wednesday 1-29-2014

Here’s the information on this week’s featured new releases coming out this Wednesday on January 29th!

Huge news this week! Serenity returns in an all new six issue mini series written by Josh Whedon’s brother Zack!

Serentiy_Leaves_on_the_Wind_1

Set after the events of Serenity the movie!
Malcolm Reynolds’s crew shook the ‘verse to its core when they laid bare the crimes against humanity undertaken by their sinister government-the Alliance. Always outlaws, Mal, a very pregnant Zoe, new pilot River Tam, and the other surviving crew members are in greater danger than ever.
As anyone who’s been in the shop knows, we’re huge Firefly fans, so this is a big deal to us! We’ve also got a full selection of the previous Serenity graphic novels! Just ask the staff to point you in the right direction!

Over at Marvel it looks like a pretty cool week with Inhumanity #2!

Inhumanity_2

Written by Matt Fraction (Hawkeye) with art by Nick Bradshaw (Wolverine and the X-men) this stand alone issue features Medusa! I’ve seen the conceptional art on this one and it looks like a great reinvention of the character. Don’t stress out about following some huge storyline, enjoy this one for what it is. Second prints of #1 will also be out this week though, in case you would like to catch up. Other key books from Marvel this week are Guardians of the Galaxy #11, Night of the Living Deadpool #2, Superior Spider-Man #26, Thor #18, and Uncanny Avengers #16!

This is a big week for Annuals over at DC, Annuals are yearly double sized special of an ongoing title, and are typically stand alone stories, making them a good way to check out a new title.

World's_Finest_Annual_1

This week’s DC Annuals including Batman and Robin Annual #2 (New 52 Dick Grayson as Robin issue) , Earth 2 Annual 2 (featuring the origin of Earth 2’s Batman), Green Lantern Corp Annual #2 and World’s Finest Annual #1 (with Earth 2’s Supergirl and Robin teaming up to take on Wonder Woman!)

Image has three core books comic out, all of which have the highest recommendation from the shop. Saga #18 (Brian Vaughn), East of West #9 (Jonathon Hickman) and Black Science #3 (Rick Remender)

Saga_18

Everyone’s already reading Saga, so be sure to give Remender’s Black Science a look. A lot of it’s appeal comes from the writing working seamlessly with the art by
Matteo Scalera and Dean White. There’s quite a bit to look at with this title. 2nd prints of #2 will also be out.

In the world of retro graphic novels, check out Jim Starlin’s Warlock Complete Collection from Marvel!

Warlock_by_Jim_Starlin

Marvel actually wrote up a really good description of this collection:
At ’70s Marvel, no one mastered the startling scope and high-concept complexity of cosmic adventure like Jim Starlin! And his work on Adam Warlock set the tone for star-spanning spectacle that is considered a high-water mark to this day. Starlin evolved Warlock to the next level, imbuing the character with the inner demons of a man-god on the brink of insanity. Forced to confront an evil version of himself and the nihilistic menace Thanos, Warlock’s conflicts weren’t just knuckle-grinding throw-downs – they were epic, existential struggles for his very soul. Featuring the first-ever assembling of the Infinity Gems; the debuts of Gamora and Pip the Troll; and an all-out struggle to save the universe joined by the Avengers, Captain Marvel and Spider-Man! Collecting STRANGE TALES (1951) #178-181, WARLOCK (1972) #9-15, AVENGERS ANNUAL #7 and MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE ANNUAL #2.
Personally I consider Avengers Annual #7 and Marvel Two In One Annual #2 to be bench mark issues of my childhood. Treat yourself to this history lesson.

Lastly, we’ll have these sweet Scribblenauts Blindbox Figures.

Scribblenauts_figures

There’s 11 different figures and the figures stand a little over two inches tall. Only $4.99 each. Pretty Cool.

That’s it for this week! Stay warm and we’ll see you this week at the comic book shop!
