Captain America: The Winter Soldier and New Releases for April 2nd
Captain America The Winter Soldier comes out this week, so we decided to do an email featuring new releases that link to some of Marvel’s hottest movie properties! Being around a comic shop always keeps you one step ahead of the mass media game. You’re thinking Captain America? We’re thinking Amazing Spider-Man 2 on May 2nd! You’re thinking Spider-Man? We’re thinking X-Men Days of Future Past on May 23rd! You’re thinking X-Men? We’re on Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1st! That was all just a clever way of letting you know how much exciting stuff is going on this summer. (And don’t let the snappy banter fool you, we’re totally thinking about Captain America right now.)
Be sure to focus all that post movie excitement into a trip to your local comic book shop. We actually specialize in Captain America. 🙂
Here’s some featured items coming out this Wednesday, April 2nd!
First up we’ve got an Original Hardcover Graphic Novel Featuring Spider-Man!
Someone has Spider-Man in their crosshairs, and the only person in the Marvel Universe who can save him is…Peter Parker’s sister?! As the web-slinger meets family he never knew, will she end up becoming his greatest ally, or the one who damns him? And what does the Kingpin of Crime have to do with it? This all-new, original graphic novel – written by Eisner Award winner Mark Waid (DAREDEVIL) and acclaimed author James Robinson (Starman), and fully painted by the legendary Gabriele Dell’Otto (SECRET WAR) – comes to you in a high-end, oversized format. It’s the web-slinger’s darkest hour – and greatest triumph! $24.99
Marvel has released a few of these OGN’s lately. I think they are actually being made to kiss up to big box stores, but that doesn’t stop the fact that Waid, Robinson and Dell’Otto add a bit of pedigree to the whole thing. Dell’Otto doesn’t do much but he he does I absolutely take notice. He’s a beautiful, dark and graceful painter.
We’re actually going to double you up on Spider-Man this week, with Ultimate Spider-Man #200!
Legendary writer Brian Michael Bendis teams with Ultimate Spider-Man artists past and present for a celebration of all things Peter Parker, Miles Morales, and more! This epic, double-sized issue features art by Dave Marquez, Mark Bagley, Mark Brooks, Sara Pichelli, and David Lafuente! On the anniversary of his death, the whole world mourns the loss of Peter Parker, the original Spider-Man. At the home of May Parker, a more intimate gathering of Peter’s closest friends grieve for the loss of their dear friend. But even as they remember their fallen friend, a sinister plan has been set in motion. And the shocking truths about Peter and his world are about to be revealed. $4.99
If I wear the Captain America badge pretty close to my chest, then it’s fair to say that Ultimate Spider-Man is John Shearer’s thing. It’s his favorite comic book of all time. It is a true ‘Tour de force” of Spider-Man stories and it’ll be satisfying to see all the artists get together for this issue. It’s not blashemy to say that the early Ultimate Spider-Man issues have the same timeless appeal as the early Lee / Ditko’s.
Guardians of the Galaxy Graphic Novel Volume One Cosmic Avengers
There’s a new rule in the galaxy: No one touches Earth! But why has Earth suddenly become the most important planet in the galaxy? That’s what the Guardians of the Galaxy are going to find out! Join Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccoon, Groot and – wait for it – the Invincible Iron Man as they embark upon one of the most explosive and eye-opening chapters of Marvel NOW! The secrets these galactic Avengers discover will rattle Marvel readers for years to come! But while London deals with a brutal invasion by the Badoon, the fate of the Guardians may have already been decided millions of miles away! Why wait for the movie? It all starts here!
Written by Brian Bendis and drawn by Steve McNiven (Civil War) this graphic novel is the perfect starting point to get antiquated with the characters. First time in soft cover for $19.99!
Also new this week is the first issue of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Prelude #1. A two issue mini series set in Marvel’s cinematic universe written by the people who redefined the team, Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning!
Captain America The Winter Soldier #1 Director’s Cut
Go behind the scenes of the classic story that inspired MARVEL’S CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER. The Red Skull lays the groundwork for his most devastating attack ever on Captain America and the land he holds dear – and with the Cosmic Cube in his possession, how can Cap hope to stop him? Â This special edition comes packed with bonus material including the complete script for the issue, Ed Brubaker’s original series proposal, Winter Soldier concept sketches and preview pages from Marvel’s Captain America Art of The Winter Soldier Hardcover. $4.99
The good news about Captain America The Winter Soldier is that it’s a really great comic book story too. You can get the complete graphic novel for $24.99, but this is a good preview of the story if you just want a taste. There will also be a new issue of Captain America this week too, along with the aforementioned Art of The Movie Hardcover.
Next up from All New Marvel NOW is Inhuman #1!
The newest super heroes of the Marvel Universe are born! A cloud of Terrigen mist is moving around the world turning regular people into Inhumans with amazing powers. But not everyone thinks this is a good thing. Discover the secret history of the Marvel Universe and get in at the ground floor of the next big Marvel franchise!
Written by Charles Soule and drawn by fan favorite Joe Madureira, Inhuman looks to flesh out the history of the Inhumans in comics before Marvel’s next big Phase Three Movie plans. (Sony won’t fork up the rights to X-Men? Well then lets call mutants ‘Inhumans’ and move forward.) We’ll even have a free lithograph for you with each book while supplies last.
It’s deviating from the Marvel Movie Universe, but I’d be remiss not to mention that one of my favorite stories is being re-released in graphic novel form, Fear Agent Volume One Re-Ignition!
When down-and-out alien exterminator Heath Huston stumbles upon an extraterrestrial legion of amoebas preparing to annihilate Earth, he’s forced to choose between the bottle and resuming his role as a peacekeeper, as the last Fear Agent. Only $9.99!
Fear Agent is one of those books that’s not for everyone, but I’ve pushed it on a lot of people over the years. Now for $9.99 I’ll suggest it to everyone. It’s basically a tribute to the themes and style from old EC Comics, like science fiction, horror and war. Written by Rick Remender and drawn by the original Walking Dead artist Tony Moore, it features the ultimate anti hero Heath Huston, who puts Punisher and Wolverine to shame in the degenerate department. Not for kids, but seriously gets my highest rec to everyone else.
Lastly, we’re proud to announce our sponsorship of Breakneck Gallery’s Captain America art show this Saturday!
We’ll be there sponsoring refreshments and handing out 100 FREE Captain America The New Deal Hardcovers to the first 100 people we bump into. This is an all ages event so be sure to bring the kids out! It’s one thing to use comics to promote literacy, it’s another to use them to teach art appreciation.
That’s it for this week! Oh wait! One more!
Deadpool vs Carnage #1! Out this Wednesday at the comic book shop!
See you there!
