New Comic Book Releases for 3-19-2014 and Hellboy Day

We’ve got a huge week of suggestions and recommendations this week at the comic book shop! There is a great deal of product coming out that we feel very strongly about, so hang on! Here we go!

Here’s the new releases for the week of March 19th, 2014!

First up is the graphic novel we’ve been waiting for for months! Green Arrow Volume 4 The Kill Machine! (This post is for you moml!)

(W) Jeff Lemire (A/CA) Andrea Sorrentino

In these stories from GREEN ARROW #17-24, a mysterious villain called Komodo knows Oliver Queens’s secrets and uses them to rob Oliver of all his wealth and his company. Now on the run from this seemingly unstoppable force, Ollie finds himself in a mystery involving his father and the island where he first became Green Arrow! Everything will change for the Emerald Archer in this new beginning for the character.

We’re happy to finally be able to recommend a Green Arrow Graphic Novel! As everyone who’s been in the shop knows, Green Arrow is Carol’s favorite character. Jeff Lemire took over the writing chores starting with issue #17 and he’s been doing some of the best work on the character in years. Andrea Sorrentino’s artwork is a perfect compliment to his writing. Perfect for new readers and fans of the ARROW TV series. Not only do you not have to read Volumes 1-3, we highly recommend that you don’t. They are not good and are unnecessary. This book gets the big thumbs up from the entire staff, especially Carol. It’s only $16.99! We will even have lots of copies of issues #25-#29 in case you want to catch completely up!

We also recommend these previous Green Arrow graphic novels if you’d like to do some more exploring. All are top notch:

  • “Green Lantern Green Arrow” (these classic stories from the early 1970’s by Dennis O’Neil and Neal Adams are literally the “On The Road” by Jack Kerouac of the comic book world. These books represent the first time comic book characters challenged social issues instead of super villains. Subjects such as racism, heroin addiction and political corruption are tackled head on.)
  • “Green Arrow Longbow Hunters” (Mike Grell redefines Green Arrow for the Dark Knight generation in the 80’s. This is Carol favorite comic book series of all time and the reason she loves the character so much. Beautifully penciled and painted)

  • “Green Arrow Archer’s Quest” (My personal favorite by novelist Brad Meltzer. A great tour through Green Arrow’s history as he tries to round up artifacts from his past. Pays a great deal of respect to DC history and continuity)
  • “Green Arrow Year One” (A modern retelling of the Green Arrow origin by Andy Diggle and JOCK. I truly believe the tone of the show was pulled off of this series)

If anything it’s all worth a read just so you can talk comic books with Carol. (I hope I got all that right mom!)

Next up ironically is Carol’s second favorite character in an All New Marvel NOW Title, DAREDEVIL #1!

Daredevil_1

Join Marvel’s fearless hero as he begins his most awe-inspiring adventure yet in the sunny city of San Francisco! Gifted with an imperceptible radar sense and a passion for justice, blind lawyer Matt Murdock-a.k.a. DAREDEVIL-protects the Golden City’s streets from all manner of evil. But big changes are in store for Matt Murdock as old haunts and familiar faces rise to give the devil his due. Hold on tight, because here comes Daredevil…the Man Without Fear!

Everyone’s heard how great Mark Waid and Chris Samnee’s run on Daredevil has been. Here’s you chance to hop on this fun title with a new number one. (We’re actually going to be doing a Daredevil appreciation week very soon, so keep your eyes posted.)

Hot on the heels of the success of Serenity, is Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season 10 #1 from Dark Horse!

Buffy_Season_10_1

New season. New rules. The age-old battle of Slayer vs. Vampire is the focus of Buffy’s life once again-it’s downright nostalgic! But with all the toying with magic she’s done lately, this girl should know it’s time for another game change . . . Shouldn’t she?

* * * Executive produced by Joss Whedon! * * *

For those who didn’t know, Joss Whedon continued Buffy in comic book form starting with season 8. All of seasons eight and nine are available in graphic novel and hardcover format. Many of the books are written by Josh Whedon himself, along with hand picked writers like Brian Vaughan (Saga), Brad Meltzer (novelist, The Book Of Lies), Jeph Loeb, and Jane Espenson. Here’s a wiki breakdown on how this stuff all plays out: Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight

Speaking of Brian Vaughan, Saga Volume Three comes out this week!

Sage_GN_Volume_3Just another reason to hop on the Saga bandwagon. Saga won all the Eisner Awards it was nominated for in 2013, including Best Continuing Series, Best New Series and Best Writer. Described as “Star Wars meets Game of Thrones”, I actually think that description cheapens it. It’s more Vaughan’s commentary on marriage, love, family and parenting told in an engaging science fiction story. We’ll be sure to have extra copies of Volumes one and two on hand this week. We also recommend Vaughan’s Y The Last Man series from Vertigo, and I especially recommend The Pride Of Baghdad.

We’re not done yet, this week also features the release of the new Scott Snyder series American Vampire Second Cycle #1 from Vertigo Comics!

American_Vampire_Second_Cycle_1

The Eisner Award-winning, critically acclaimed series is back! #1 New York Times best-selling writer Scott Snyder (BATMAN, SUPERMAN UNCHAINED, THE WAKE) and acclaimed artist Rafael Albuquerque (ANIMAL MAN) bring their blood-soaked opus into the 1960s!

The story so far…
Pearl Jones is a new kind of vampire, one of an American breed that can walk in the sun and has rattlesnake fangs. She’s beautiful and powerful – and she’s hiding from a tragic past…

Skinner Sweet is an American vamp too – the kind you love to hate. He’s good when he wants to be, but most of the time he’s downright bad. He’s Pearl’s maker, but he’s off in Mexico with an agenda of his own…
Will their two stories collide, or are they separated forever? And who is this new villain on the horizon, someone bloodier and more evil than anything seen in AMERICAN VAMPIRE before? Who is THE GRAY TRADER and what does his arrival mean for Skinner and Pearl?
Whether you’re already a fan or interested in checking out this series, the extra-sized AMERICAN VAMPIRE: SECOND CYCLE #1 is the perfect jumping-on point!

Snyder’s been killing it with Batman Zero Year and The Wake. Watch as he returns to the book that he was hand picked by Steven King to write. To supplement this new release we’ll have all five American Vampire graphic novels in stock, along with a $1 preview issue of the original series. If you really want a taste, try one of the $7.99 stand alone issues, American Vampire Anthology, or American Vampire Long Road To Hell. Both great books.

Oh yeah, if you’re not reading The Wake, you should be. It’s a ten issue series and issues one through five have just been collected in an affordable $9.99 book called The Wake Part One.

There’s more? Yup. This Saturday March 22nd is HELLBOY DAY!

To Commemorate Hellboy’s 20th Anniversary and the release of “Hellboy The First 20 Years Hardcover” Dark Horse has declared March 22nd “Hellboy Day”

Hellboy_First_20_years_HC
