New Comic Releases for the week of March 12th

It’s fair to say that the All New Marvel NOW titles have been a hit, developing a sub culture and following within the shop! This week we’ve got three more #1’s to try out!

First up is Captain Marvel #1!

Captain_Marvel_1

Hero! Pilot! Avenger! Captain Marvel, Earth’s Mightiest Hero with death-defying powers and an attitude to match, is back and launching headfirst into an all-new ongoing series! As Captain Marvel, a.k.a. Carol Danvers, comes to a crossroads with a new life and new romance, she makes a dramatic decision that will alter the course of her life and the entire Marvel Universe in the months to come. It’s time to go HIGHER, FURTHER, FASTER and more in the most super-powered comic around!

Adding to Marvel new lexicon of powerful female characters is Kelly Sue DeConnick’s Captain Marvel. It was fun watching her develop as a writer over the last few years, and we’re very excited for her relaunch of this book. (She’s Matt Fraction’s wife too!) It’s also a good week all around for our illustrious female customers as Black Widow #4 will be out too! (Along with reprints of #2 and #3 to catch you up)

Next up, Avengers Undercover #1!

Avengers_Undercover_1

WHEN TEEN HEROES INFILTRATE THE MASTERS OF EVIL, WHO WILL BREAK BAD?

Damaged by their experience in Murder World, five conflicted young superhumans go rogue and infiltrate the Masters of Evil, planning to bring the Avengers’ rivals down from within. But the longer the teens spend undercover, the more they descend into darkness, and as they start to build relationships with these multi-layered criminals, the line between good and evil blurs. What will happen first…joining the Masters for real, or getting exposed and killed? If you thought Murder World was dangerous, just wait until “Most Promising New Talent” Harvey award-winner Dennis Hopeless and acclaimed artist Kev Walker surround you with Evil!

I do like Dennis Hopeless, he’s got a structure to his work that I appreciate. An idea like this would likely fall apart without his involvement in it. Plus, it seems Marvel trusts him to do whatever he likes with their lower tier characters, which is refreshing.

Third, we’ve got the relaunch of Secret Avengers #1!

SAVE THE EMPIRE, Part One
The all-new Secret Avengers are ready to get started. Are they going to be the world’s most effective secret squad? Or will their personal issues tear them apart? U-DECIDE! Three missions kick off at the same time: one in the space, one on the ground…and one in the air. And no one’s ready. Except for the attackers. Russian spa. Helicarrier. Space station. Falling satellites. A hired hitman with nothing to lose. The Fury. WAIT. Yes. THE FURY. Why is Hawkeye still around? And why are these people chasing him? Why are Black Widow and Spider Woman in a Russian spa? Do questions in teasers excite you? RUN THE MISSION, DON’T GET SEEN, SAVE THE WORLD. NOW!

Sounds exciting, but I don’t know much about writer Ales Kot. Here’s a pretty smart interview about Spider-Woman’s place on the team with quotes from him.

Also from Marvel this week is:

  • All New X-Men #24
  • Deadpool #25
  • Fantastic Four #2
  • Hawkeye #17 (!)
  • Superior Spider-Man #29
  • Wolverine #3
  • X-Men Legacy #300 (?)
  • and more!

For people who have been following my favorite DC title, Forever Evil, but don’t know how it started, here’s your chance to read the whole lead in story with the Justice League Trinity War Hardcover!

The blockbuster event of the summer is collected in this new hardcover featuring JUSTICE LEAGUE #22-23, JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #6-7, JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #22-23, CONSTANTINE #5, TRINITY OF SIN: PANDORA #1-3 and TRINITY OF SIN: PHANTOM STRANGER #11. When the three Justice Leagues go to war with one another, whose side will everyone be on? Allies will be born, friends will become enemies, and the DC Universe will never be the same!

I wasn’t sure about this run when it started coming out but it had such a great ending that really pulled the story together. Yup, if you haven’t read it you should jump right in. Almost completely written by Geoff Johns himself. For me, this story symbolized the point where the DC New 52 found a way to pay tribute to old DC stories back in the day, while maintaining their current continuity. Ultimately, a good story is a good story. $29.99!

DC’s also got new issues:

  • Batman #29
  • Batgirl #29
  • Justice League Of America #13
  • 100 page Batman Super Spectacular
  • NIghtwing #29 (he’s doomed)
  • Superman Wonder Woman #6
  • and more!

I we proudly present the return of Dave Lapham’s Stray Bullets from Image Comics.

Stray_Bullats_1_Killers

One of the most acclaimed crime series ever returns! When Gary Goldsmith and his young son Asa are involved in a deadly hit and run, their night goes from bad to worse when their grisly deed is witnessed by a disturbing stranger. Find out what thirty dollars, a dirty diaper, and a girl named Yummy will reveal about the true meaning of life in a little story we like to call “The Love Ride.” Featuring the return of Spanish Scott!

This new arc of stories about life and love and all the things we do to kill them starts out in the best noir tradition, then turns the genre on its ear. Would you expect any less? If you’ve never read STRAY BULLETS before, jump in here. Hell, jump in anywhere. Every issue always presents a complete story that fits into a larger whole.

Stray Bullets is cool. There’s now way around it. The old graphic novels have been out of print for years. To celebrate this release Image is printing the first series in it’s entirety for $59.99!

Stray_Bullets_Uber_Allies

A ONE-TIME PRINTING DIRECT MARKET EXCLUSIVE! The original five story arcs of one of the all-time greatest crime comic series are collected in this GIANT 1,200 page volume. “The Innocence of Nihilism,” “Somewhere Out West,” “Other People,” “Dark Days,” and “HiJinks and Derring-Do” appear in their entirety. Collects STRAY BULLETS #1-41. (issue #41 is actually just coming out this week too, and will be included in this collection.

If you’re a fan of just Walking Dead and were looking for a way to break into more, this is the book you’re looking for. Strange Bullets is very dense and very complex. You’re exhausted in a good way after you read it.

Here’s a cool interview with Dave Lapham on returning to this project.

Well, that’s it for this week! Of course we’ve also got a full compliment of other books to go with these. Here’s one last image to walk away with that I thought was pretty cool.

Not sure if the books going to be any good, but Alex Ross resonated with my childhood pretty with this cover.

We’ll see you this week at the comic book shop!
