Andrea’s Late Nite Recs for the week 08.17.2022

Hey, comic shop friends! First up, lots of shop news this week!

This Thursday, the 18th, from 8 pm until Midnight, we’re doing our second “Late Nite Comics”! That means we’ll fill the new comic book table with 40 long boxes of comics all at a dollar each, 50 cents each for 100 or more! The main theme in these boxes will be “Marvels”. We will also offer 50% off all back issues, except the ones on the wall!

John also bought a really comprehensive DC Silver and Bronze Collection, and he plans to rerack the back issue wall every Friday at noon with books from this collection, starting this Friday, August 19th. Keep an eye out for the Rerack video on Facebook on that day!

Also, John Shearer will be doing his first-ever rerack video on Monday, August 22nd! Featuring mostly Bronze Age Marvel and other stuff he enjoys. (Yes, that means another full rerack is coming!) Good luck Shearer!

Check our Facebook for the videos on those days and for any other updates!

In shop-adjacent news that I’m very excited about, a friend of the shop Laura (Lenora on The Big Bad B-Movie Show, and our event photographer) has a new show called Midnight Rental starting at 9 pm this Saturday, the 20th on the Found Footage Festival YouTube channel! (Hello Melindas!) She’ll be talking about lesser-known and lesser-loved movies from the back room of a video store. She’s also a guest on this week’s episode of VCR Party Live, also on the FFF YouTube channel, so check that out! @MIDNIGHTRENTALVIDEO on Instagram and

Now onto this week’s comic book picks!

MARVEL

Ms. Marvel & Moon Knight #1 follows last week’s team-up with Wolverine. The mechanical varmints are back and moving in on Moon Knight’s neighborhood. They’re sending him messages, so Ms. Marvel joins him to put a stop to the robots before anyone gets hurt. Another fun all-ages read. Next up: Venom!

The second issue of Edge of Spider-Verse features Ghost-Spider by Mallory Rosenthal and Ig Guara, Spider-UK by Ramzee and Ruairi Coleman, Shathra by Dan Slott and Paco Medina, and Mini-Spider by Chris Giarrusso. With the new Spider-UK and the introduction of the antagonist for this huge story!

Avengers 1,000,000 BC #1 gives us a lost tale of the Prehistoric Avengers:  All-Father Odin, The Starbrand, Agamotto the Sorcerer Supreme, The Black Panther, The Ghost Rider, The Iron Fist, and The Phoenix. See the dark events that shatter their rank! Look upon their lives shaping the future of the Marvel Universe! Witness the monumental event that reunites them one last time: the secret origin of Thor!

DC

The first in a series of 64-page Prestige format specials about seven of Batman’s greatest villains, Batman: One Bad Day – The Riddler is a deep dive into the mind of The Dark Knight’s most intellectual foe from Tom King and Mitch Gerads. The Riddler is always playing a game, and there are always rules, but when he kills a man in broad daylight for seemingly no reason, Batman has to figure out the Riddler’s motivation in this psychological thriller. It’s a tense, harsh story that I really enjoyed.

DC also has new issues of DC Vs Vampires: All Out War, Scooby-Doo Where Are You?, and a Facsimile Edition of Sandman #1 this week.

SMALL PRESS

Shirtless Bear-Fighter is back in the new miniseries Shirtless Bear-Fighter 2 #1 from Image. 32 ad-free pages of shirtlessness and fighting bears! Giant gummy bears! Tardigrades! This time series, co-creators Jody Leheup and Nil Vendrell send Shirtless on a search for his true origin, which sets him on a cosmic collision course with the bear god – Ursa Major! I didn’t read the first series, but I will definitely pick it up because this looks ridiculous!

“In the end, it wasn’t hatred, ignorance, or greed that snuffed humanity out. Just good old-fashioned monsters.”

In Heart Eyes, the new series from Vault by Dennis Hopeless and Victor Ibanez, the unlucky few who survived sanity-eating monsters now hide underground. Somehow Lupe survived on the streets, and now that Rico has brought her back to his family, the questions start. How did she get here? Why is she smiling when no one smiles where the monsters lurk?

There are also two new Image number one this week, 20th Century Men and The Last Shadowhawk.

We’re still getting more back issues on the floor, there’s a big Batman collection and a bunch of modern Disney and Batman Adventures in the All Ages boxes, so there’s plenty to check out when you stop in for Late Nite Comics!
