September Events at CNJComics!

Hey there, true believers! John D here to share with you some of the things we’ve got going this month! (and a few peaks next month as well!)

First up, this upcoming Thursday, September 21st, is another installment of “Late-Nite Comics,” where we keep the shop open from 8 p.m. till midnight and load up with dollar stock from our storage locker.

This one will be something special, featuring the return of the Marvels! The dollar stock will feature a majority of brand new Marvel Dollar Stock from collections we’ve recently purchased. Our goal is to have at least 80% brand new dollar stock out for your diving enjoyment. We also offer 50% off all back issues, and we’ve been putting a lot of new books out lately from the above-mentioned collections.

Please come out! It’s super fun, and the money we collect towards the next two LNCs will be going to new flooring in November!

Saturday, September 23rd, will be our first open signing in conjunction with Superman’s 85th Anniversary Celebration!

Phillip Kennedy Johnson will be here for a free open signing from 4 pm to 6 pm! Phillip wrote the Action Comics Warworld storyline featuring Superman and is currently in the middle of a stellar run on the Incredible Hulk. (a staff favorite right now.) Phillip is also writing Green Lantern War Journal #1, which is hot off the press this Wednesday, September 20th. Everyone attending will be able to get five free signatures!

The next day, on Sunday, September 24th, we’ll be set up in the back of the West Side Market from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., handing out free Superman Comics to everyone!

We’ll also be joined by Chad Bilyeu (Chad in Amsterdam), who is hosting a drop-on comic book workshop, as well as Dawn Arrington of Comics on the Corner and Dan Gorman, who will be signing free Superman 85th Anniversary posters! Having a booth at the West Side Market is an opportunity we couldn’t pass up. Too cool.

Moving into October, we’ll be setting up at the Jeff Harper Show on Sunday, October 1st, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

We don’t do many shows, but Jeff’s is a classic comic book show that’s been going on forever. We bring out excess inventory and are always ready to make a deal! (Plus, it’s like a little over a mile from my home.)

The biggest event we’ve got going for Superman’s 85th will be our free open signing with the legendary Mark Waid on Friday, October 13th.

Mark’s written everything, from Captain America to the Flash to Daredevil and, of course, Superman himself. His work on Kingdom Come with Alex Ross is one of the greatest stories of all time. Mark will be signing up to five books from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. (Yes, you heard it here first. All the outside promo materials say 6 pm to 8 pm, but we’re letting our customer base in an hour early to give them a head start before the general public. This will be a big one.) Afterward, prepare to settle in for a trivia contest with Mark Waid competing against the CNJComics staff team, as well as a team from Cleveland’s own comic historian Mike Sangiacomo. We’ll be hosting this in the foyer next to the shop from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., and refreshments will be served. A who’s who of Cleveland Comic Book retailers is submitting the questions, and this should be an event to remember.

They say Mark is unbeatable, so come and watch the staff get slaughtered on their own battlefront.

Other October signings will be Sina Grace from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, October 20th, and Sarah Kuhn from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, October 27th. (we’ll cover these more in a future email.)

How are all these signings made possible? Through the hard work of everyone over at Superman’s Cleveland, who have put together this great celebration in some of Cleveland’s most iconic locations. (uh, like us!)

Honoring Truth, Justice, and the American Way.

This year marks the 85th anniversary of the creation of Superman, the first superhero and Cleveland’s most iconic contribution to American and world cultures. Generously supported by Ohio Humanities and hosted by the Rust Belt Humanities Lab at Ursuline College and the Ohio Center for the Book at Cleveland Public Library, Superman’s Cleveland gathers institutional partners from across Northeast Ohio. Superman’s Cleveland is for everyone: comics fans, families, scholars, history buffs, regional boosters, and lovers of culture across the greater Cleveland area.

Here’s a link to all the things that are going on around town.

Be sure to check out as many as you can, and enjoy Superman’s rich history in Cleveland!
