DC COMICS
Better get ready to ask for a second print, because we’re about to be sold out before Wednesday! Thanks to those of you who took our recommendation and added it to your pull already! (You only have yourself to blame if you miss out, because we’ve been talking about this one for a while now.) Jason Aaron and Rafa Sandoval’s new take on Superman is another great entry in DC’s Absolute Universe. On this version of Krypton the Science League are the ruling class, and Superman’s parents “were not among them.” His mother, Lara, was labeled unruly when she criticized Krypton’s lack of funding for interstellar travel. His father, Jor-El, was forced into the Labor Class after giving a graduation speech condemning environmental recklessness. These are the people of Steel. These are Superman’s people. After the destruction of Krypton, he finds himself on another dying planet, Earth, alone and working the mines of Brazil. Is he just a transient just trying to help others? Or is he one of the rumored Omega Men the Peacemakers and the Lazarus Corp are trying to suppress? Can he save this planet from itself? Or will Earth end up as another Krypton?
Continuing on from the Merry Little Batman movie, it’s Little Batman Month One! Gotham City is recovering from the Joker’s attack, and Little Batman, aka Damian Wayne, is preparing for whatever comes next. But what comes next is mingling. At the kids table. Bruce wants him to learn the importance of being Damian, but when the Wayne New Year’s Eve party is crashed by some suspicious guests, it’s up to Little Batman to find the balance between both his personas and save the day! Written by Morgan Evans, with art by Jon Mikel.
SMALL PRESS COMICS
Yay new Kelly Sue DeConnick! With the new series FML, she teams up with artist David Lopez to take us to a familiar, yet more metal and more witchy Portland. With war, wildfires, and a pandemic raging, metal fan Riley, his goth younger sister, and his former Riot Grrrl mom are trying to navigate life. He’s trying to balance high school and band practice with his weirdo friends, Savvy, Glory, and Lydia. Their band, STFU, gets a chance to play at Heavyfest, but they may lose their shot when they perform a spell from a zine, and things get even weirder for Riley. The creatures, witchcraft, and metal he fills his notebooks with may be a bit closer to home than he’d like. Keep reading as we, as DeConnick says, “pick apart the unprocessed trauma festering beneath our skins, the promise of the misfit, and the perilous power of the stories we whisper in the dark.”
