MARVEL COMICS
Marvel has two One World Under Doom tie-ins this week, and stuff is getting real…
In the second of the Fantastic Four OWUD issues, it’s up to “The Dream Team” to find a way to stop Doom. “It’s been a week. …God it’s only been a week.” With Reed holed up in his lab, trying to solve the Problem of Doom, Ben takes Sue to New York for a break and to visit She-Hulk. The trip is far from relaxing, when they come across a mob of humans pursuing a family of vampires. Tensions are still running high after Blood Hunt, and Doom’s vilification of vampires isn’t helping anyone. Ben, Sue, and Jen face a choice, to side with humans, or to give help to those that need it. Ryan North and Cory Smith bring One World Under Doom a lot closer to our reality.
Return of the Red Rage! Benjamin Percy and Geoff Shaw’s new Red Hulk series kicks off with an inciting international incident! Or does it?! Thunderbolt Ross has been imprisoned by Doctor Doom. And he’s not the only one! Learning he’s part of a war games think tank, along with Machine Man, Deathlok and other criminal, political, and scientific minds, Ross has no desire to work for Doom. Can he orchestrate a jailbreak? Can he do it without the Red Hulk’s powers?
The second of the J. Michael Straczynski penned one shots featuring unlikely team-ups! This one has Volstagg the Voluminous bringing Captain America to Asgard, with art by Bernard Chang. Sent to Trigon, a small world at the farthest edge of the Ten Realms, Volstagg was meant to discover what resources Trigon contained. He found more than he bargained for. The war-ravaged world needed hope, and a hero. For the first time, Volstagg was able to be who he truly was. But now he needs help from the only man skilled enough to end a war, Steve Rogers. This is another excellent tale, focusing on what makes a hero, and the divide between who we are inside and who we present to those who know us.
DC COMICS
Does it even matter what else DC puts out on an Absolute week? I would say, no. The Tetracide still pushes forward, still threatens Gateway City. Wonder Woman has done everything she can to stop it, and she’s running out of time. But when “you are out of time, you consider desperate ideas.” Forced to use the lasso of Sacrifice, it’s the one she finds the most cruel, but it is her only option. Will it be enough to end the Tetracide? Can she come back from Sacrifice’s transformation?
SMALL PRESS COMICS
Collecting Nights #6-12, with the second part of the trade paperback only story, Season One Part Two is out! Wyatt Kennedy and Luigi Formisano continue to give us one of the best comic books in the past few years! If you picked up the first trade of Nights Season One, make sure to get the rest of the story here. And if you haven’t, we ordered more of volume one, and it’s usually on at least two of our staff recommendation rows. Best read after dark. And this is only $16.99!
And once you catch up on the first twelve issues, issue #13 is out too! Starting a new story arc and a new season, you can jump on here, but you know we’ll all tell you to read the first two graphic novels! This time Kennedy and Formisano jump back to the 1970s and introduce rookie Chimera agent Tsukumari, who is investigating the rise of dangerous magical oddities and artifacts. The investigation will lead him from Estonia to Las Vegas, and on a collision course with a vampire girl. A collision that will ripple across decades.
If our recommendations of Nights isn’t enough for you to pick it up, it was just announced that an animated series is in development! This quote sums up why we all love it too:
“Nights isn’t the type of comic you read and say ‘oh neat, cool art, good story’ and then put back on the shelf with all the other comics that have cool art and good stories. Nights is a generational experience in the making,” said Alexei Bochenek, Creative Director at Titmouse. “Reading it reminds me of when I used to stay up late watching FLCL at midnight on Toonami, having my mind blown not just by how dynamic it was, but by how seen it made me feel, a mirror to my whole self, good and bad, dreams and fears. If you know you know. I want to bring that feeling back to the animation fans like me who have been chasing it ever since, and introduce a whole new audience to the experience of discovering themselves through a new show that they feel seen by and become huge champions of, too. That’s what Nights is.”
Get hyped and read Nights if you haven’t! Read it again if you have!
Never have I wanted a superhero’s power more! Allie is the black sheep, a horror loving teen who doesn’t want to be a part of her family’s churchgoing. She becomes even more estranged after a run-in with an elder god. Jumpscare is now blessed with the power to conjure any weapon from any horror movie she’s seen! And she’s seen a lot of horror films! Her skills and heroism lead her to become one of the most popular superheroes in Empire City, but that also means more enemies. When something tragic happens, she may have to revisit her past, and her family. A Beyond Mortal tie-in four issue mini-series from Cullen Bunn and Danny Luckert.
Godzilla vs America! His first stop? Chicago! With four stories all from Chicago comic creators! First, it’s Fangoolie vs Godzilla at a football game in “Godzilla Does Chicago” written by Mike Costa with art by Ryan Browne. Then, Godzilla hitches a ride on the El in Tim Seeley’s “Blue Line Sign.” Next, Ezra Claytan Daniels presents “Chi Godzilla”, as Cottage Grove Heights tries to save their homes from the kaiju. Finally, the titular “Godzilla Versus Chicago” from Caroline Cash finds an unlikely hero going up against Godzilla! This one-shot leads into other cities across the country.
