MARVEL COMICS
During the Venom War, both Eddie Brock and Carnage were fatally wounded. Their only hope for survival was to bond with each other. Can Brock control his new symbiote’s endless bloodlust? Will he give himself over to madness and murder? The duo’s tenuous deal has them going after a serial killer, Hopscotch. Any one of the passengers on their flight could be the killer Eddie is searching for, but Carnage just wants to kill anyone. “Just choose one and get it done.” Writer Charles Soule and artist Jesus Saiz are leading Eddie Brock into the darkest parts of the Marvel Universe, as Carnage wants someone with juice for a new host, and some of Marvel’s most powerful are on the list! And there’s a splash page that puts the Red Band books to shame!

This is the big one this week! Six months ago, Doctor Doom became Sorcerer Supreme, and then disappeared behind Laveria’s closed borders. With a global broadcast, Doom announced that every nation on Earth has joined the new United Latveria, and he is now Emperor of the World. Welcome to One World Under Doom! “Government will not save you. Capitalism will not, cannot, save you. Doom is above all. Doom will save you.” How has he convinced each and every country’s leaders to follow? Is it mind control? Magic? Doombots? It’s not affecting the Avengers, whatever it is, and they’re determined to find out Doom’s true intentions. They’re not the only ones against Doom, Baron Zemo and Hydra are marching on Doomstadt, and intend to take him down. With uprisings being squashed, and Doom’s decrees being widely accepted, what will happen when Earth begins to welcome their new Emperor with open arms? Written by Ryan North, with art by R.B. Silva. Continuing on this month in Doom Academy, Thunderbolts: Doomstrike, X-Factor, Weapon X-Men, Storm, Fantastic Four, and Red Hulk!
DC COMICS
You know I have to tell you again how amazing Absolute Batman is. This is the penultimate issue to the first story arc! I don’t know where they’re going from here, but I’m here for it. Will a broken, beaten Bruce Wayne compromise himself and his morals to Black Mask? (Probably not?) But he did make that deal… “I don’t need cars, or planes, or computers. I don’t need anything at all. All I need… is Batman.”
This special issue showcases two sides of the same story set within the DC Vs. Vampires: World War V series, and forces two characters to reexamine what survival means in this world. “Darkness” finds Wonder Woman disobeying the Queen’s orders and keeping a child she finds. “Light” follows Alfred Pennyworth as he tries to learn his ring’s power. Their paths couldn’t be more different, but for each one, a chance encounter will show them how anger and vengeance can either break or fuel them. How it can be ruin or salvation. Both written by Matthew Rosenberg, with art on “Darkness” by Nikola Cizmesija, and art on “Light” by Daniel Bayliss.
The Green Lantern Corps returns! This new ongoing series from writers Morgan Hampton and Jeremy Adams, with art by Fernando Pasarin, continues the story from the Green Lantern Civil Corps one-shot. The United Planets is in disarray, creating a power vacuum. Sorrow has plans to create his own power battery. Fear is spreading throughout the universe, and it’s up to the Corps to keep it under control. All the Lanterns you know are here, along with a bunch of interesting new ones, including the return of the greatest Green Lantern in the Corps!
SMALL PRESS COMICS
“In the Yard, there is talk of atrocities…Some speak of a mysterious storm slaughtering all within its path.” Welcome to the Bug Wars, the miniseries that’s like the best, most violent, not for kids, 80s cartoon/toy line never made! With a dash of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids backyard shenanigans! From Jason Aaron and Mahmud Asrar, issue #1 is the oversized debut of a sprawling dark fantasy adventure epic that starts with the introduction of the House of Slaymaker. With nothing left but his father’s childhood home, bug-loving Slade Slaymaker, his mother, and bug-hating brother Syd move back into the house. The house his father died in. A house with a kingdom of tiny and deadly warriors hidden in the Yard. Marauding ant armies, spellcasting spider witches, beetle riding barbarians, maggot monks, and more Mytes have been at war, and now Slade is suddenly lost in this vicious world. As Jason Aaron says in his letter, “…get your ass ready for war. You’re a Bug Warrior now. May you live to see the dew.”
The Creep wants to be your Valentine! Creepshow has a one-shot special for all of us lonely hearts, with three tales of terror to remind us of how bad we could have it!
Mirka Andolfo has a “Heart to Heart” with Lucas, a sensitive soul in love with love itself, in a love story with a happy ending! Or as happy as a Creepshow story ending can be!
Our favorite from Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees, Patrick Horvath, gives us another gory gift with “Cursed Casanova”. Poor Eugene learns that true love is a hell of a drug! If the rom-com Love Potion #9 was a horror film!
A first date turns into a nightmare in Yul-Pyeong Oh and Pure’s “Penguin Avenger”, as Wendy learns the dating scene is a zoo!
It’ll rip your heart out!
The best book title of the week! Mine is a Long Lonesome Grave is a revenge-horror tale, from writer Justin Jordan and artist Chris Shehan, where magic and murder go hand in bloody hand. Harley Creed was a bad man. Now released from prison, he only wants one thing, to leave the town of Briar Falls, West Virginia, and his violent past, behind. But the family ties of the Weavers are woven deep, and don’t forget the misdeeds of Creed. Now that he’s returned, the Weaver family’s simmering vengeance is boiling over, and someone has put a hex on Harley. He has seven days before his death to find who has placed this old folk magic on him, and reverse it. There’s no shortage of suspects, and he’s coming for them all.
