Andrea’s New Year, New Picks for 01.02.2025

Happy New Year Comic Shop Friends!

We closed early New Year’s Eve and took the day off January 1st to get ready for you all for New Comic Day on Thursday the 2nd.

I hope your New Year’s goal is to read more comics, and I hope you all cleared out your files…

Even Gail Simone wanted you to pick up your books because she reposted our reminder! So we hope you didn’t upset Gail!!!

We appreciate those of you who stopped in, called in to check your files, and settled up as best you could. Picking up your books regularly helps us with ordering correctly, and inventory management, and keeps us from having to close your file. We want you to read all the great stuff coming out!

Late Nite Comics is back in January! Thursday the 16th we’ll be staying open until midnight, filling the shop with dollar stock, and back issues will be 50% off! John’s not taking the excess dollar stock to Uncle Todd’s farm, so for one night only you can participate in the Purge! Come in then to see what that entails…

Check out this big check! Thanks again to all of you who donated to help out the Cleveland Food Bank! John and Luna dropped off this year’s donation of $8717! That creates 26,151 meals, and that brings our total for the last twelve years to 185,647 meals! That is amazing. Let’s keep this momentum going for 2025’s Art Show!

It’s a smaller week to start off the year, so there are no Small Press recommendations and the new series are mostly Marvel.

MARVEL COMICS

The first of five new one-shots that ask, “What if Galactus turned some of Marvel’s heroes into his new cosmic heralds?” First up, writer Mat Groom and artist Lan Medina take Earth’s strongest warrior, Hulk, and put him into service as the strongest herald. Can Galactus contain Hulk’s fury? Can Bruce Banner convince the planets destined for devouring to evacuate? What’s going to happen when the Avengers show up?

With the new movie on the horizon, it’s time for a new Sam Wilson and Red Hulk book! Written by Greg Pak and Even Narcisse, with art by Eder Messias and Valentine De Landro, it’s Captain America against corporate evil! Attending Isaiah Bradley’s birthday party with his cousin, Billie, Sam learns about a new tech venture advertised as a land grant program for the disenfranchised. Billie’s been told she’ll be accepted if she can convince Sam to be a spokes-hero, but he’s not totally convinced. When he learns of Eaglestar’s paramilitary past, that their head of security is General Maverick, aka Red Hulk, he’s still not convinced.  But after Captain America stops an attack on the location he and Billie are visiting, the organization’s dark underbelly is exposed, and he’s definitely not signing up as a spokesperson! Next up, it’s Captain America versus Red Hulk!

Deadpool and Wolverine are teaming up again in Ben Percy and Joshua Cassara’s new ongoing series! Wade and Logan are the only things standing between the Earth and its annihilation, as an old villain is unearthed and an ages-long plan comes to fruition. Who is behind Deadpool’s non-quippy behavior? What’s in the chained, concrete-encased chest that O.N.E. operatives have opened? What is the mission Wolverine is being dragged on? Find out in this first issue that’s full of blood, surprises, twists, teeth stealing, beer spilling, eye gouging action!

Ooooo, I think Cable’s got a crush! When a mission goes catastrophically awry, Cable is left stranded in the dystopian city of Salvation Bay, and in the midst of a civil war. He meets another like him, Commander Avery Ryder, and he’s ready to help her out in the resistance and stick around for a while. But someone from the Second Roxxon War is not far behind him, and Cable’s involvement in this war will change his life forever. Written by David Pepose with art by Mike Henderson.

DC COMICS

The first new All-In series of the new year! Writers John Ridley and Ryan Parrott, along with artist Mike Perkins, introduce the Atom Project! Ray Palmer, Atom, and Ryan Choi, Atom, are working on crafting the world’s first superpower reallocation and backup system on the Watchtower. Captain Atom has lost his powers, and he’s currently on the run. What happened to make him a fugitive? Are Ray’s false promises and experiments the cause? “I’m not worried about him being up for the challenge…I’m worried about what we’ll be on the other side.” It all blows up in this atomic-fueled spy thriller!

Start your year off right, with another excellent issue of Absolute Superman. Years ago on Krypton, Jor-El and Lara became utterly convinced that their planet was headed towards cataclysm. But what could two lowly peons of the Labor Guild possibly do to save their entire species? The answer is decidedly not what you think…
