A bohemian sci-fi beatnik love story! With mushrooms! Zira is a college student living in Greenwich Village in the late 50s, who falls in love with a sci-fi short story writer. Dealing with Bert’s erratic behavior, and her mother’s disapproval, while clinging to the unstable relationship, has Zira losing herself and her dreams of becoming a writer. Unbeknownst to anyone an invasion has begun, a mycelial invasion, led by Dr. Myrtle Morel, and it’s going to affect Zira and her friends. To stem any rebellion the spores are infecting the artists of the Village, starting with envious Marlon who looks up to Bert. Can the beatniks survive the hive mind mycelium? Can Zira and Bert’s relationship survive the strain? Written by Alisa Kwitney, with art by Mauricet.
The last of the Horizon Experiment one-shots, but hopefully not the last of these stories, is Finders Keepers, a “reverse Indiana Jones” story, from writer Vita Ayala and artist Skylar Patridge. Ines leaves Puerto Rico to follow her dreams of archeology. Her years of hard work and sacrifice have led her to an internship at the American Art Museum, but when the Museum is set to unveil a new exhibit featuring the Boriken artifact El Corazon, the heart of the island, something shifts in her. With protests calling for the return of misappropriated artifacts to their place of origin, her grandmother’s stories of El Corazon del Yunque, and the condescending superiors in her department, Ines feels called to steal El Corazon. As a fan of Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Mummy (1999), this heist story about returning items to their rightful cultures is something I needed. With action and folklore elements mixed in, this is an excellent start to Ines’s adventures of dismantling major institutions’ erasures and theft of minority history.
