New releases for March 5th, 2014 at CNJ Comics

Here’s a selection of cool stuff coming out this Wednesday, March 5th 2014!

Since we’re in the spirit of small press comics this week after being at the ComicsPro meeting, we’re actually going to lead with our Independent picks of the week. (And they’re not even all Image this time!)

Want an inside look into the meeting? Check out this speech from Image Publisher Eric Stephenson. He praised the direct market while also insulting every other publisher in the room. We love Image Comics but we also love Superheroes too. (and My Little Pony for that matter) – ‘Good Comics And Bad Comics’ Are All That Matter

First up from Boom Studios is Evil Empire #1 from Say Anything front man Max Bemis!

Evil_Empire_1

You can feel safe hopping on this new 16 issue maxi series right from the beginning, I’ve read it and it’s great. How many times in science fiction are you just dropped into a dystopian future storyline? (think Blade Runner, or even Star Wars for that matter) Evil Empire will show you how we would get to that future starting now! See an entire Evil Empire state built from the ground up. Max Bemis proved he wasn’t just cashing in on his notoriety when he wrote Polarity, he really has the ability to write a complicated story like this. I look forward to following it each month. Bemis’ Polarity is also available collected in graphic novel format. Just ask!

Dark Horse is giving us another title with a female lead with Veil #1!

Veil_1

A beautiful girl wakes up in an abandoned subway station with no memory of how she

got there. When men try to hurt her . . . they wind up dead. Where did she come from?
And what is she capable of?

The key to Veil #1 is that it’s written by Greg Rucka, who recently dazzled us with Lazarus from Image Comics. It comes off a cheap exploitation but we expect a pretty cool book here. Ruck has a track record for powerful female leads and had a hand in the Gotham Central Graphic Novels, which will definitely contribute to the feel of the new GOTHAM TV series. All of this stuff is well worth checking out if it sounds interesting.

Oh Image, we still love you, and we’re excited about this week’s Starlight #1!

StarlightVolume1GN

Forty years ago, Duke McQueen was the space hero who saved the universe. But then he came back home, got married, had kids and grew old. Now his children have left and his wife has passed away, leaving him alone with nothing except his memories… until a call comes from a distant world asking him back for his final and greatest adventure. This issue launches the much-anticipated Millarworld Universe. Get in on the start of something MASSIVE!

Basically it’s a deconstruction of the Flash Gordan mythos by Mark Millar (Kick Ass, Civil War) and part of the new MillarWorld imprint from Image Comics! There’s a new issue of Millar’s Jupiter’s Legacy this week too!

We can always tell at the shop when the Walking Dead is back on air, demand for the product starts up all over again. This week is Volume 20 of the Walking Dead Graphic Novels!

Walking_Dead_Graphic_Novel_vol_20

While it’s volume 20, it’s the first volume of the ‘All Out War’ Storyline, so you can hop in here. But really, we keep all Walking Dead graphic novels and Hardcovers in at all times, so you should just start from the beginning and dive in. I’ve never heard of anyone being disappointed. It truly is the best the medium has to offer. If you’ve ever even thought about reading Walking Dead do yourself a favor and follow through on that thought. Series 5 of The Walking Dead TV Show Action Figures also come out this week!

Want to top off that Walking Dead purchase? Pick up Afterlife With Archie #4!

Afterlife_with_Archie_4

New Ongoing Series! “Escape from Riverdale,” Part 4 [of 5]. With two more members of our beloved gang infected by the dreadful zombie-virus, Riverdale’s one sanctuary – Lodge Mansion – has been compromised. The kids are left to make a significant decision – do they stay and fight or flee the only town they’ve ever known? Meanwhile, Archie makes a horrific discovery in his own home, one that may cost him his life! It’s red-headed teen versus gruesomely undead canine in the latest chapter of this ground-breaking Teen+ series! Definitely not for all ages! Covers by Francesco Francavilla and Tim Seeley

While Afterlife with Archie is basically a ‘Walking Dead Archie Mash-Up”, here’s the thing. It’s not a joke. Not at all. Great story line by Roberto Aguirre Sacasa and art by Francesco Francavilla (Batman Black Mirror, Black Beetle). Archie even just named Roberto chief creative offer after the success of this title.http://comicsalliance.com/archie-roberto-aguirre-sacasa-chief-creative-officer-lena-dunham/ It’s only $2.99 and we’ll have reprints of #1 and #3 available too! Best three bucks you’ll spend this week.

We were trying to spotlight independents this week, but Marvel’s got a good one, and let’s face it. We love superhero comic books. We also love Moon Knight.

Moon_Knight_1

Marc Spector is Moon Knight!…Or is he? It’s hard to tell these days, especially when New York’s wildest vigilante protects the street with two-fisted justice and three-that’s right, count ’em-different personalities! But even with the mystical force of Khonshu fueling his crusade, how does the night’s greatest detective save a city that’s as twisted as he is? The road to victory is going to hurt. A lot. Marvel’s most mind-bending adventure begins NOW as Moon Knight sleuths his way to the rotten core of New York’s most bizarre mysteries!

Basically, they had me at Moon Knight. Plus Warren Ellis (Transmetropolitan, Authority) is writing it. Moon Knight is like the Deadpool of the 1980’s. It’s hard not to be excited about a new Moon Knight series. All New Marvel NOW also has a new Wolverine and The X-Men #1 and a Magneto #1 that looks pretty cool.

We’re going to end with some thing different and cool from DC Direct this week, the new Wonder Woman Art of War Statue by Jim Lee.

Wonder_Woman_Art_OF_War_Statue

Just like the Batman Black and White Statues and the Superman Man Of Steel Statues, this will be an ongoing line from DC featuring different artists version of Wonder Woman. Pretty amazing start.  Only $79.95!

Again, to reiterate our stance. We love Superhero Comics, Independents, and licensed comic books like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. We really just love the medium and helping our customers find their place in it. We truly do believe there is something for everyone within the walls of our shop.

Keep on reading and we’ll see you this week at the comic book shop!
