Jack Kirby’s Birthday
Here’s the news for the week of August 26th 2015!
JACK KIRBY
We’ll have our regular batch of new releases on Wednesday August 26th (and there’s some really great stuff coming out too!) but more importantly this weekend we’ll be celebrating the 98th birthday of Jack Kirby, in conjunction with Jack’s granddaughter Jillian Kirby and the Kirby 4 Heroes Initiative!
HERO INITIATIVE
Every year since 2012 Jillian has worked with an ever expanding network of comic shops to raise awareness about her grandfather and to collect donations for the Hero Initiative, a non profit dedicated to helping veteran comic book creators in need of financial assistance. Funds collected across the country will be given to Jillian so she can make one giant donation in honor of her grandfather.
Find out everything about the Kirby 4 Heroes Initiative here or watch this inspirational video. (especially the ending, where Jillian’s father thanks her for her hard work.)
Here at the shop, we’ve got a few things going to support her.
BIRTHDAY EVENTS
First, on Friday August 28th (Jack’s actual birthday) we’ll be donating 20% of our sales to Kirby 4 Heroes. Just stop in and buy something and you’ll be making a donation!
Second, we’ll be holding a raffle all weekend for the AMAZING “KING SIZE KIRBY” HARDCOVER! (First Prize)

Our Second Prize be an authentic New Gods Mother Box based on the designs by Jack Kirby.
While it looks cool, this thing is actually awful. It cycles through three different sets of tones and it seems like it will never shut up. It retails for $59.99 though, and quite like Silkie in Teen Titans Go, we’ve go to get rid of that thing.
If you win, you can decide whether to pick it up or not.
You can get a raffle slip all weekend, from Friday to Sunday, just by making a purchase. You can get two entries if you buy anything with Jack Kirby art in it! Winners will be drawn at the end of the day on Sunday.
MORE JACK KIRBY GREATS
Marvel has a special comic coming out this week to celebrate Jack’s birthday and the 50th Anniversary of SHIELD, the over-sized S.H.I.E.L.D. #9!
A commemorative 50th Anniversary story that spans the past and the present, and unites Phil Coulson and Nick Fury, Sr. in a unique cross-time adventure to answer a riddle that lies at the heart of the origins of SHIELD: who is The Man Called D.E.A.T.H.?Includes a sequence penciled by Jack Kirby and inked by Jim Steranko that has never seen print as part of a story before!
This book retails for $5.99 and it does count towards getting an extra raffle slip this weekend!
It’s pretty safe to say we wouldn’t be here without the work of Jack Kirby, so each year we like to be a part of keeping his legacy alive.
Stop by the shop this weekend to have a chance to win an awesome book, pick up a new story by Kirby and Sterenko, and help support the dream of a girl trying to honor her grandfather.
