International Women’s Day March 8th and CNJ Comics
Carol and John’s Comic Shop is proud to announce our participation in International Women’s Day!This Friday March 8th from 5pm to 8pm we’ll be celebrating all the women in our lives at the comic book shop! We’ve always prided ourselves on creating a friendly shop for everyone, but we know that sometimes the local comic shop can be a terror for female customers. We hope to break down some walls by having an evening specifically dedicated to creating a comfortable space for women as they enjoy pop culture! This is our goal for IWD 2013!Our little first year event will go a little something like this:
On Friday March 8th from 5pm to 8pm we’ll celebrate International Women’s Day!
- 5PM! We’ll start handing out free graphic novels to the first 150 ladies through the door! First come first pick!
- We’ve got 50 copies of GIRL COMICS and 100 copies of ESSENTIAL MS MARVEL VOLUME #1 to give away!
“Girls Comics” is an amazing graphic novel containing short stories featuring mainstream Marvel Comics characters that are all written and drawn by indie female artists and writers! Featured creators include Amanda Conner, Devin Grayson, Ann Nocenti and Molly Crabapple (of Dr. Sketchy Fame!)
“Essential Ms Marvel Volume #1” is a black and white collection reprinting the entire Ms. Marvel series from 1976 plus some extra’s! It looks like Ms Marvel will be featured in the next Avengers movie! This book contains her first appearance along with the first appearances of X-men characters Rouge and Mystique!
- 6PM! We are honored to have 5 strong female artists from the Cleveland area doing sketches for charity!
- These powerful women include:
- Lauren Chaikin www.laurenchaikin.com
- Angela Oster www.angelaoster.com
- Ashley Ribblett www.aribblett.
blogspot.com - Erin Schectman www.Erininartland.
com / www.rustbeltmonster.com - Shawny Walthaw www.knockedknees.com
When the Great Lakes Science Center has their ‘Girls Go Science’ days, I like to take my daughter down there to just be around the fantastic women they have discussing their careers in science. This is how I feel about having these women visit the shop!
Sketch covers (comics with black covers on them for drawing on) will be sold at the shop and for a small donation the ladies will be happy to do a sketch for you on them! All proceeds will go to charity (see below) Please check out there websites to see their work and style!
- 7PM! Carol will be hosting a free wine party! Yeah! Don’t forget to bring your ID! We plan to have plenty to go around, but if you’d like to bring a bottle to keep the party going that would be great! (I’m sure there’s an extra free graphic novel in there for you if you do!)
- 8PM! We’ll be raffling off a WOMEN OF MARVEL : CELEBRATING SEVEN DECADES OMNIBUS! This massive hardcover is over 1100 pages and have a cover price of $125.00! Every women walking through the door will be eligible for for a raffle ticket!
As for the charity we’ll be working towards that night, we were trying to come up with a good local female charity when a really great opportunity presented itself. Carol’s best friend in the world recently had some medical complications that have made her mobility difficult. Carol wants to buy her a wheelchair so the two of them can hang out like they used too and go places. I’ve had the honor of getting to hang out with these two ladies and there really isn’t anything as amazing as watching two old best friends pal out together. I can’t think of a better charity to work for then to put wheels back underneath this relationship. Nothing says International Women’s Day to me like two women enjoying each other’s friendship. I’m very proud of my mother in this endeavor and I thank out above artists in advance.
So feel free to stop by! Guys are welcome to! Bring your girlfriend, wife, mother or daughter and show them your hobby! The three most important people in my life are my daughter, my wife and my mother, so making this day special is a priority!www.internationalwomensday.com(it’s been going on for over a hundred years) John DudasCarol and John’s Comic Book Shop17462 Lorain AveCleveland, OH 44111
