Andrea’s Chilling Picks for 10.12.2022

The next Late Nite Comics is coming up on Thursday, October 20th, from 8 pm to midnight, and this time we’ll have a special guest to help us get ready for Halloween!

Artist Cory Holliday will be at the shop starting at 6 pm, selling his art prints, which are a fantastic mash-up of horror characters and classic comic book covers. You can check out Cory’s work HERE and on Instagram @vileconsumption, or stop in the shop that night!

We’ll have some of his prints hanging in the shop as Halloween decorations!

And in addition to the new dollar stock, we’ll have out for Late Nite Comics, we’ll also have 50% off back issues! There have been a lot of collections coming in, so help us make room so we can get this new stuff on the floor!

We also have TONS of action figures, and this week we have new Star Wars and Black Panther figures that are timed perfectly with the Marvel new releases and the upcoming Black Panther: Wakanda Forever film.

MARVEL

Before The Ronin and his droid encountered the Sith in a small village, the two wanderers had a different type of encounter in the snowy mountains. Takashi Okazaki continues his story from the Star Wars: Visions episode “The Duel”, crossing Star Wars mythology with elements of Feudal Japan. The black and white art with limited color looks amazing, and the Ewoks gambling with a droid is a great moment.

The new miniseries, Wakanda, spotlights a different Wakandan character in each issue. In the first story from Stephanie Williams and Paco Medina, Shuri proves that even without the Black Panther, Wakanda is not without heroes to protect it. The backup story is part one of History of the Black Panthers by Evan Narcisse and Natacha Bustos, providing a definitive overview of every Wakandan who has held the mantle!

After a war with the Kree and a worsening climate left the surface of Earth mostly inhospitable, a dwindling population of air-breathers remains. A lack of resources and a reliance on Atlantis wear on the humans, and few superheroes left. Now Namor, no longer King of Atlantis, must try to keep the peace between the underwater kingdom and the islands of land. Written by Christopher Cantwell with art by Pasqual Ferry.

DC

From the pages of Batman comes an all-new ongoing series following Ghost-Maker and the Batman Incorporated team, written by Ed Brisson and art by John Timms. When someone from Ghost-Maker and Batman’s recent past is brutally murdered, the international team’s detective skills are put to the test. Someone is out to send a message by targeting those who have trained members over the years. “No More Teachers.”

Batman and Scooby-Doo team up again in this new all-ages twelve-issue limited series from Sholly Fisch and Dario Brizuela! The Scooby Gang is pulled into a strange mystery with Batman, Robin, and the Batmen of All Nations, and the trail leads to some of the most haunted places. And to Ra’s al Ghul and his League of Assassins!

Eight tales of Traumatizing Time Travel in this 80-page Giant written by Paul Levitz, Sholly Fisch, Peter V. Nguyen, Zac Thompson, Charles Skaggs, Jeremy Haun, Matthew Levine, and Tim Seely; with art by Raul Fernandez, Luciano Vecchio, Peter V. Nguyen, Tom Mandrake, Juan Doe, Jorge Corona, and Kelley Jones. This book has everything: zombies, the JSA, hauntings, the Gotham City Sirens, Swamp Thing, irradiated monstrosities, trick or treating, demons, the Super Sons, black cats, the Phantom Stranger, and Deadman! More spooky stories to get you in that Halloween spirit!

SMALL PRESS

Hitomi is a new Image series from HS Tak and Isabella Mazzanti. A young woman is searching for the Samurai that killed her family in Feudal Era Japan, traveling the countryside and struggling to find her place in a society entrenched in discrimination and violence. This saga follows the trials and tribulations of the young warrior as she works to gain the rank of Samurai.

Animals possessed by demons! Adorable killer guinea pig! (My favorite animal and inner beast!) Salem enacts vigilante justice for animals harmed by a sorcerer in this one-shot written by Cullen Bunn and art by Dan Schoening. I loved it!

Two new horror series I would recommend are out in collected trade paperback this week as well, Closet and Slumber, both from Image.

Closet is an existential horror tale by James Tynion IV and Gavin Fullerton. Jamie sees a monster in his bedroom closet; his father Thom assures him the monsters will stay in the apartment after they move across the country, but Thom is wrong about many things, and the monsters aren’t left behind.

Slumber is about Stetson, a nightmare hunter and dream detective who enters clients’ dreams, investigates their dreamscapes, and kills their nightmares. Her past comes back to haunt her as she tracks a nightmare serial killer responsible for the mysterious death of her daughter. Written by Tyler Burton Smith with art by Vanessa Cardinali, this candy-colored book is both goofy and gory.

One last reminder, our Halloween Event is coming up on Sunday, October 30th, from 12 pm to 5 pm! We’ll have comics and candy to hand out, and our photographer, Laura, will be here all day to capture your costumes!
