MARVEL COMICS
Everyone’s favorite sentient tree creature has his own series! Groot! When invaders attack his planet, Groot, and his friends Gleef and Tweeg, are captured, and now he must accept his heroic destiny. A destiny that leads him to Private Mar-Vel. Writer Dan Abnett and artist Damian Couceiro reveal Groot’s origin and his first adventure through the galaxy.
It’s Carnage versus Miles Morales! Cletus Kasady is back, and with his soul trapped in the Extrembiote Armor, he’s worse and more chaotic than ever! This oversized issue features part one of the main story, written by Alex Paknadel and Cody Ziglar with art by Julius Ohta, followed by three backup stories “Field Test” by Cody Ziglar and Travel Foreman, “Flesh and Blood” by David Pepose and Paris Alleyne, and “Dead to Rites” by Cheryl Lynn Eaton and Will Robson. Part of the Summer of Symbiotes, Carnage Reigns begins here and continues in Miles Morales: Spider-Man #6, Carnage #13, and Red Goblin #5.
“Spider-Rex, Spider-Rex, tiny arms, real thick neck, spins a web, Jurassic size, super big, but somehow flies!” Edge of Spider-Verse is back! It’s Spider-Rex versus Venomsaurus in the fun first story from Karla Pacheco and Pere Perez. In the second, Zander Cannon and Guillermo Sanna present The Curse of the Spider-Killer, a noir-esque tale of threats and desperation.
DC COMICS
Everyone thinks Peacemaker sucks. The Suicide Squad, terrorists, the cashier at the grocery store. But Christopher Smith wants to be seen as a hero. While busting up some bad guys, he finds a fancy little gentleman, a pug that looks like he’s wearing a tuxedo, and Chris finds the love he’s been denied his whole life. Now, someone has dognapped his new friend; someone with some villainous plans requiring Peacemaker’s super-violent skills. Kyle Starks and Steve Pugh’s series feels like an episode of the show, which I love, so I recommend this if you liked the show as well. “Would you eat a spoonful of poop for world peace?”
If you’ve ever wanted to see a space dinosaur tea party, this book is for you! Mark Waid and Dan Mora present the World’s Mightiest Mortal in a new Dawn of DC solo series. After the events of Lazarus Planet, magic is working differently, and Billy Batson isn’t able to share his Shazam powers with his siblings. And it seems like something is off with him when he’s powered up. Could it be because the gods are angry that he’s wasting his potential, and they feel he needs to restore the reputation of the gods? Probably.
SMALL PRESS
Rana Fawaaz was at home cooking when the stars of the zodiac signs disappeared from the sky and didn’t even notice it happened, but every night since, her dreams have been full of fire. Now, she and eleven other people have been granted the superhuman powers of the Starsigns. Writer Saladin Ahmed and artist Megan Levens begin a series about astrology, superpowers, and a diverse found family.
Jennifer has been cast, without an audition, as the lead in Razide’s Lament, a new theater production that is three acts of gothic horror. Set in a castle on a stormy night, as three sisters seek shelter, it may be more than just a play. Reality and fiction blur, and Jennifer finds that there is no escaping the theatre until the curtain rises and Razide himself takes center stage. Cullen Bunn teams with artist Arjuna Susini for a dark tale of terror at the intersection of life and death.
