Andrea’s Post Storm Picks for 08.14.2024

Hi Comic Shop Friends! I hope you’re all safe and with power after last week’s storms. We were lucky the shop didn’t lose power and we could provide you with reading material while the internet was out. All of us here lost power at home, and as of Tuesday morning, all have it back again. What a week! As we all deal with unexpected costs due to the storm, we understand if you need more time to pick up your books, just let us know, and we’ll be happy to hold them.

But on that note, if you do have the budget for books:

This Thursday the 15th is Late Nite Comics! 50% off back issues! Tons of dollar stock! And like we announced last week, all sales of dollar books, including Late Nite, will be donated to the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.

We’ll be taking what we collect and adding it to the total at Eddie P Comic Con on Saturday, August 24th.

Ed Piskor’s family has put together the Eddie P Comic Con in West Mifflin PA, and are holding a raffle to benefit the 988 Lifeline. To find out more about the Con, you can find @ed_piskors_legacy and @eddipcomicon on Instagram. For more information about the 988 Lifeline, you can visit 988lifeline.org.

DC COMICS

Amanda Waller’s quest for Absolute Power continues with two tie-in issues this week:

Dick Grayson is gathering what heroes remain to bolster the resistance, but even with the new allies, it may not be enough to protect their hidden lair from Failsafe! Everyone in Gotham knows, “Batman always wins.” With things getting harder each year, and no justice for wrongdoings, the city has no choice but to keep the faith and keep repeating, “Batman always wins.” But which Batman this time? The Dark Knight? Or Failsafe, relentless, with all of Batman’s skills and none of his morals? A solid story from writer Pornsak Pichetshote and artist Claire Roe.

In Jeremy Adams and Fernando Pasarin’s tie-in issue, Hal Jordan must use the weapons of some of the villains to escape Amanda Waller’s clutches and reconnect with the heroes who are set to strike back! Meanwhile, Carol sets out on a mission to help others, learning what it means to be a hero along the way. In the backup story, witness the rise of the Shadow Lanterns by Marc Guggenheim and Darick Robertson.

DC Vs Vampires returns as part of DC’s new Elseworlds line! It’s World War V in Matthew Rosenberg and Otto Schmidt’s twelve issue series. The fragile truce between the humans, led by Green Arrow, and the vampire queen Barbara Gordon’s vampire army, is on thin ice. It’s the dead of winter. Vampires are starving. Humans are hidden. And Damian Wayne looks to destroy what little peace remains with his guerrilla fighters. He’s the only one fighting against the Queen, and his actions may lead to another war. This leaves Green Arrow with a choice. Will he stand and fight? Or sacrifice Damian to keep the tenuous peace?

There’s no escape from the House of Secrets and the first-ever appearance of Swamp Thing! Join your host, Abel, as he introduces the story of Alex Olsen, the original Swamp Thing, and three other horror tales written by Len Wein, Joe Orlando, and Virgil North, with art by Bernie Wrightson, Bill Draut, Dick Dillin, Alan Lee Weiss, and Tony DeZuniga.

SMALL PRESS COMICS

Garth Ennis and Jacen Burrows’s new series Babs is here! A lady barbarian, raven-haired, suspicious-minded, wielder of an okay sword! Fair of face with a foul mouth! Wearing the most uncomfortable scale mail bra and forced to deal with misogynistic Mork the Orc and his “dudes”, when all she wants to do is drink with her friend Izzy! It’s not set in any “universe”, but if you like Barbaric and Deathstalker, you should pick up Babs. Bloody, goofy, fun with dragons, talking swords, and talking horses.

Beginning where the animated show left off in 1964, and continuing from the prelude Free Comic Book Day story, Jonny Quest learns you can’t go home again. Or can you? Returning home to Palm Key, Jonny, Dr. Quest, Race Bannon, and Hadji find their home strangely different. As they left it, but with a feeling of despair, and simultaneously redecorated and abandoned. What has happened in the week they were away? Who is lurking in the shadows? Find out in the new adventure series from Joe Casey and Sebastian Piriz, as the legendary boy explorer returns!
