Andrea’s Long Halloween of Picks for 09.25.2024

Hi Comic Shop Friends! We had a great week of sales and events last week, with Late Nite, the End of Summer Sale, and the free comics at the West Side Market! We’ve got a few more coming up in the next couple of months, so stay tuned for more info on those!

This email is kind of brief because we had a lot to do on Tuesday, with over half of this week’s books coming in that morning, so I didn’t have time to do a deep dive on everything! Stop in on Wednesday to see what else is good!

MARVEL COMICS

It’s the finale of The Infinity Watch, from Derek Landy and Salvador Larroca! It’s the Avengers versus the Infinity Stone Bearers versus Thanos! Can the Stone Bearers manage to get along and work together long enough to defeat Thanos? It might be even harder with Thor and Captain Marvel trying to separate them before they become too powerful. And even harder when Thanos shows up to retrieve his lost love, the Death Stone!

The Venom War rages on with a week of zombies in two tie-ins: Venom War: Zombiotes #2, and Venom War: Daredevil #1!

A horde of zombiotes descends on Hell’s Kitchen in Chris Condon and Lan Medina’s one-shot. Matt Murdock must protect the children at St. Nick’s from the zombiotes hunger for human flesh. Elektra knows the stale smell of death and knows she must stop the symbiotes before death infests Hell’s Kitchen.  Will the two Daredevils be enough as they stand as the last line of defense?

DC COMICS

In 1996, writer Jeph Loeb and artist Tim Sale teamed up for Batman: The Long Halloween. Now, Loeb returns for its long-anticipated final act: Batman: The Last Halloween, an all-new 10-part mystery. In each issue, Loeb will be joined by one of the top artists in comics, in a tribute to Sale’s art and legacy. In issue one, Gotham City learns to fear Halloween once more as a terrible event threatens to destroy Jim Gordon’s life and puts Batman and Robin’s teamwork to the test more than ever before. In a city of liars, masked vigilantes, and criminals…can anyone be trusted? Featuring art by Eduardo Risso in issue #1.

Kyle Starks and Kyle Hotz bring us the sleazefest to end all sleazefest! It’s the Lobo Cancellation Special! Full of all the blood, gore, head-crushing, and corkscrew slashing you could ever want! And the best villain name I’ve ever heard, but I don’t dare utter it in this family-friendly newsletter! Find out what it is in this goopy, goofy, gory one-shot!

It’s the conclusion of Task Force VII, as we head toward the finale of Absolute Power! J’onn J’onZz has felt the devastating effects of Waller’s Task Force VII, but hope glimmers even in the face of the ghastly Global Guardian, as a new generation of fighters from around the world join forces to rise up! Written by Dan Watters, with art by Pete Woods.

The other Absolute Power tie-ins this week are Absolute Power Origins #3 and Green Arrow #16.

SMALL PRESS COMICS

Ryan Stegman and Jason Howard’s new DSTLRY title is an action-packed battle between demons and angels, with human Bryce Hunter stuck in the middle. Bryce’s faith is shattered when he loses his job and finds his wife cheating on him with the bishop of their church. At the same time four demons escape from Hell and head to Earth. One, Uvydus, decides to possess Bryce to make up for the bad things they’ve done. Bryce accepts the demon’s offer to bond together when Uvydus helps him stand up for himself, but with a hardcore Exorcist team after them, and multiple demons trying to reshape Earth into their own kingdom, the new friends aren’t going to have an easy time!

Another Halloween season, another volume of Creepshow! It’s back and creepier than ever! This time with two tales of terror! In the first,” Let ‘er Trip” written by Chip Zdarsky (Who must have made a deal with the devil for how much he’s been churning out.) with art by Kagan McLeod, a mother must take matters into her own hands, and mind, to free her daughter from a cult. The second, “Scrimshaw” written and drawn by James Stokoe, follows a reporter looking for a good local story, and what he finds is a tale that starts with a severed hand, but where does it end?

Featuring seven first issues from Rick Remender’s Giant Generator imprint, this is the perfect place to check out some great series for only $9.99! This paperback collects all these issues written by Rick Remender: The Sacrificers #1 with artist Max Fiumara, Deadly Class #1 with artist Wes Craig, Black Science #1 with artist Matteo Scalera, Low #1 with artist Greg Tocchini, Seven to Eternity #1 with artist Jerome Opena, Death or Glory #1 with artist Bengal, and The Scumbag #1 with artist Lewis Larosa.
