MARVEL COMICS

Ororo Munroe has been a thief, a goddess, a queen, an X-Man, and an Avenger. She’s lived many lives and saved so many, many more. Now in her own solo series from writer Murewa Ayodele and artist Lucas Werneck, Storm has a new role as the most prominent, most respected, and most powerful mutant on the world stage, and in that role, she must deal with a moral conflict that may change the public’s view of her. Storm and Frenzy help in Oklahoma City after a nuclear facility meltdown, but the secret Storm keeps about the truth of the incident will come out eventually.

Robbie Reyes gets his own Marvel’s Voices Special with three new stories! In “Ofrenda” by Carlos Hernandez and Moises Hidalgo, Gabe and Charlene lure Captain America and Captain Marvel over with a fake kidnapping (“Captain Marvel is one of the most powerful beings in the multiverse. If I don’t #%@& with her, no one will.”) to see their ofrenda for Robbie. “Of Wolves and Sheep” by Felipe Smith and Daniel Bayliss, has Robbie trying to make it home in time for dinner while dealing with his fear.  “A Fantasmic Roller Derby Adventure” by Melissa Flores and Jan Bazaldua begins with what should have been a fun family day, but “Why wouldn’t a giant portal open up…so a whole pack of Hellhounds can unexpectedly crash the party?!” Good thing he has some help from an all-new Ghost Rider! With an interview with Robbie Reyes co-creator Felipe Smith!

DC COMICS

This week is the end of Absolute Power, which leads into the All In Special one-shot, and the new Absolute titles. We read the previews of Absolute Batman and Absolute Wonder Woman so far, and they are well worth adding to your pull lists! And we are not-so-patiently waiting to read Absolute Superman.

Are you All In? We are! The next chapter of DC history starts here from Scott Snyder, Joshua Williamson, Daniel Sampere, and Wes Craig, presented as the “Alpha” and the “Omega” in this symmetrical flipbook, for only $4.99! The heroes of the core DC Universe are reuniting after the events of Absolute Power, and forming a new version of the Justice League. (Complete with membership cards! We have some promo cards to give out too!) It’s just in time because Darkseid has returned! But it’s a very different version, and as Superman gathers the heroes to defend Earth, Booster Gold is sent to find where this Darkseid came from. Flip the issue over to read an excellent Darkseid’s story, and the two converge in the middle, sending shock waves that will ripple into every DC series! There are hints at what is happening with the new Absolute Universe, where the big three we’re used to coming of age without the advantages their counterparts in the main DCU had while facing greater opposition. Look for the All In logo on some of this week’s books, and upcoming titles, as new storylines and creative teams start to roll out.

Actor, writer, and all-around horror fan David Dastmalchian creates a new Creature Commando team with artist Jesus Hervas! Welcome to the Creature Unit, a team of monsters and misfits assembled by the government with the help of one mad-ly talented scientist. Introducing the World’s Weirdest Warriors! Vincent Velcro the vampire, Wanda the werewolf, Mina the Gorgon, Lucky the reanimated undead soldier, and Dr. Barbara West are recruited by Lieutenant Shrieve for a mission to stop a catastrophically dangerous weapon from being fully developed. Shrieve has some secrets he’d like to keep, and his own agenda. Good thing he can’t keep his thoughts quiet from mind reader Mina. But the not-so-good thing is who he’s in cahoots with!

I know what you did last Crisis. And in Blackest Night. And Flashpoint. It’s eight new horrific tales set within every major crisis in the DC Universe’s history! “What Kind of Hero?” is Batgirl in the Crisis on Infinite Earths set story by Cavan Scott and Ario Anindito. Dr. Light is in “A Constant State of Healing” by Nathan Cayanan and V Ken Marion during the Millenium Event. Ashley Allen and Jose Luis have the Birds of Prey run into Scarecrow causing visions of “Dearly Departed” during the Final Night. The JSA is “At the Point of Vanishing” in Matthew Levine and Jordi Tarragona’s Zero Hour story. It’s a “Crisis Obscura” for Nightwing during Infinite Crisis from Dan DiDio and M.L. Sanapo. Scarecrow gives a horror movie fan a “Jump Scare” in Rachel Pinnelas and Will Robson’s Blackest Night tale. Lex Luthor is “God’s Chosen Man” in the Final Crisis Dave Wielgosz and Sid Kotian short. And Midnighter and Professor Pyg give in to some “Violent Tendencies” from Rex Ogle and Adam Graphite during Flashpoint.

SMALL PRESS COMICS

Brian Azzarello and Vanesa Del Rey mix metal, magic, and mayhem into a woman’s revenge story. A young American photographer, Val, travels to Oslo to expand her portfolio and check out the black metal scene. An unnamed band takes her into the deep woods for a photo shoot, but after they torture her in a ritual and leave her for dead, she becomes a vessel for vengeance. The band may hail Satan, but there are older gods creeping below. The old gods of Norse mythology become a guide for Val, but will she follow a warrior’s path, or become something beyond human? It’s folk horror in the vein of Jennifer’s Body.

Ready for another horror anthology? It’s from Ghost Machine, so you’d better be! Welcome to Hyde Street. In every city, every town, off any road, off any avenue, make a wrong turn and you could end up on Hyde Street. Be careful who you turn to for help. Be careful who you talk to. They may end up helping you to your death! Meet Mr. X-Ray and Pranky, the World’s Most Dangerous Scout! These two, and many others, are here to take you through Hyde Street and show you the sights and frights! Written by Geoff Johns, with art by Ivan Reis. And make sure to add the Devour tie-in one-shot too!

A group of high school kids are on a field trip, but a detour around a fallen tree takes them to Hill Creek, and some blown tires force them to stay the night. All of which would be fine, except secluded Hill Creek has a monstrous secret. There’s no way they can get out before it’s too late. Get in before curfew. Lock the doors and hope it’s enough to keep out what’s trying to get in. “There’s no escape…Not from Hill creek. Not from the Curse.” Can these teens survive the Night of the Slashers? Probably not! But this series written by Cavan Scott with art by Paul Fry, is a fun read for horror fans!
