Andrea’s Picks for 11.13.2024

Hey, Comic Shop Friends! We had a great time with Tony Fleecs and Tone Rodriguez this past Sunday! Thanks to all of you who came out!

Here’s what else is happening in the shop in November!

Late Nite Comics is coming up on the 21st! We’ll stay open until midnight and pack the shop with dollar stock and 50% off back issues! And for one night only, John is allowing you to film in the shop! Film your dollar diving escapades for your social media channels!

We will be closed on Thursday the 28th for Thanksgiving. My plans are to eat too much Tofurky and watch the MST3K Turkey Day Marathon.

Rest up on Thursday, so you’re ready for our Black Friday weekend sale! Running Friday the 29th through Sunday December 1st, we’ll have 50% off all back issues, and the foyer will be loaded up with dollar stock, and if you get 100 or more dollar books they’ll be 50 cents each! The perfect time to start your holiday shopping!

Speaking of holiday gifts, our new shirts are selling quickly! We’ve sold out of 2XL and 3XL already and are almost out of smalls, so pick one up soon!

We just marked down our older shirt design to $5 each! We have small, medium, and large left, but stock is limited! It’s a perfect stocking stuffer!

Make sure to pick up a blank cover for our Annual Holiday Art Show! This year’s theme is an Homage to a Classic Comic Book Cover! Submissions are due back by Sunday December 15th by 5pm. We’ll have them on display in the foyer before our Holiday Party, and all proceeds from the Art Show raffle will benefit the Cleveland Food Bank.

We’ll be set up at Genghis Con on Sunday, December 1st! They just posted the exhibitor list, and it’s packed! It’s a great opportunity to support local comic creators and artists, and get some holiday gifts!

Before you see them at Genghis Con, we’re hosting Philip and Shelly Bond in the shop on Saturday, November 30th! They’ll be here for a free signing from 5pm to 6pm.

Philip is a comic book artist who started on British comic magazines Deadline and 2000 AD. He started work at Vertigo in 1992, on Shade the Changing Man, and illustrated new Tank Girl material in 1995 around the release of the (in my opinion underrated) film. He’s also illustrated comic strips for bands like the Smashing Pumpkins and Sum 41, and covers for The Exterminators and American Splendor.

Shelly is a comic book editor known for her two decades at Vertigo, where she served as executive director from 2013 to 2016. She launched the IDW imprint, Black Crown in 2017, and since 2019 has published new books and comics through her company, Off Register, started with Philip Bond.

MARVEL COMICS

From the pages of X-Men, writer Alyssa Wong and artist Vincenzo Carratu send Psylocke into the underbelly of the Marvel Universe! Made for violence, trained to be an assassin, but she chose to be an X-Man. Cyclops orders Psylocke to take a vacation, but it’s quickly interrupted by Devon Di Angelo, who has a tip about an A.I.M. hosted party. To discover the source of a new variant of the mutant growth hormone, Kwannon has to go undercover. It may be a little too easy to give in to her violent reflexes when she goes up against those who prey on mutants. Can she maintain her choice to be a hero?

DC COMICS

Jefferson Pierce is dealing with his feelings of failing to protect his family when Amanda Waller stole their powers. Anissa Pierce has left home, and Jennifer is trying to bring her back to Metropolis. The Justice League’s new metahuman outreach initiative has Black Lightning helping those with changed and new powers learn to use them before they harm anyone. But everything is about to change when someone comes to him for help with dangerous new powers, and may jeopardize the coexistence between humans and Metas! Written by Brandon Thomas, with art by Fico Ossio.

Along with Absolute Batman #2 this week, there’s the Noir Edition of issue #1! Pick up this new Dark Knight in black and white! Hot damn, this book is goooood.

SMALL PRESS COMICS

It’s Joe time! The Energon Universe expands with the new ongoing G.I. Joe series from writer Joshua Williamson and artist Tom Reilly. With Destro and M.A.R.S. Industries in cahoots with Cobra, the Joes have their work cut out for them! Going up against what feels like an impossible fight is Duke, and his teammates, Rock ‘N’ Roll, Stalker, Cover Girl, Clutch, and Baroness. Dealing with the aftermath of the Transformers’ arrival on Earth and the discovery of Energon, the team is tasked with protecting a shard found at a crash site (See Transformers for more on this!), but you know those bad boys at Cobra aren’t going to let anything stand in the way of them taking over the world. Plus the introduction of an all-new character in the biggest comic book launch of the decade! You can jump on here, or if you want a full immersion into the Energon Universe, we have graphic novels and current issues for Duke, Cobra Commander, Destro, Scarlett, Transformers, and Void Rivals!
